Why do people generally believe what they want to believe even if there are facts available to prove them wrong?

Faith needs no evidence apparently, but they wont think twice about asking you to prove their diety doesnt exist... like you can prove a negative

because often *facts* are subjective and can be manipulated to prove or disprove something...very seldom are *facts* set in stone with only one interpetation...

It is an inbuilt part of the human psyche to believe exactly what we wish to believe proof or no proof. We seem to choose to believe that which is most convenient to our lifestyle, or the lifestyle we aspire to have

Calssic defensive mechanism of the human psyche. No one wants to be proven wrong. Because when people KNOW their right (even if it's possible they aren't) they have a sense of security that they exactly what's happening and they can control it. When people are wrong they feel insecure and lost since they don't know what to do or expect. The mind will defend itself by forcing the person to think he's right in order to force out that insecurity.

They are afriad of "change". It's easier and "safer" to just go around with the heads in the ground.
