In short, teams in the standings are behind or ahead because they have played more or less games than the other(s) at that given point in time.
So, a team who is 10-5 is .5 games ahead of a team who is 9-5 because the latter is a game behind (15 games total). It is a way to gauge what team is better at the given point in time.
