I truly believe we need to be more honest with young children even if it hurts them. When we lie to them about the painful things (such as death of a loved one, or health), it only teaches them that lying in some situations is okay. The truth is always the best way to go. I can remember my grandfather dying when I was very young, no one told me, yet I felt all this chaos around me. I thought it was something I did. Young children are very perceptive probably more then most adult. We cannot protect our children forever so why not help them to handle walking through painful and pleasure. They watch us and that is how they become, not what we say but what we do.

Assume that kids learn "everything" from adults, and you'll be surprised at how well your kids will be off. I can't really say much without repeating what anonymous said, but kids are actually a lot smarter than adults seem to think (myself included).
