Like many Republicans under Bu$h, they managed to rationalise it away.

A lot of them did support him. He did wonders for the economy, and he was popular for other reasons than the policies regarding Jews. Not every German supported him, but not every German hated him either. Many people supported him initially, for his economic policies and other policies, but did not like his later social policies.
