If people were able to carry pistols in their purse or jacket or in a holster at their side do you believe robberies on the street would go up or down, seeing a thief would not know who could defend themselve or not?

The states that allow citizens to carry firearms have lower incidents of carjacking and home invasion robbery. Most likely, because criminals don't know who's packing heat.

Look at mid-west America in the 1800's, there were a few bank robberies and shootings, but not in proportion of today's violence. This is mainly because weapons, such as Revolvers were left exposed, so what criminal would want to commit a crime if he/she knew the person next to them had a gun? The answer is little to none. Typically more guns in more places means less crime.

The crime rate would fall like a stone.

Some US states have started to encourage law abiding citizens to take the training class and get a concealed carry permit so that they can legally carry a concealed firearm. So far, its working - crime rate is falling.

People may carry guns on their person. I do think it an interesting study as to how robbers choose their targets.

They already do. Most off duty police officers in addition to the hundreds of thousands with concealed weapons permits.

The studies have already been done-crime went down. Check out John Lott's books.

No, because the thief would always have the advantage. You cannot defend yourself against someone who already has the draw on you. Deaths would go up, because some people would foolishly try to go for their guns and the thief would then shoot them. Others might die because they would make a move that the thief might interpret as going for a gun, and strike first. Yet more might die when two people misunderstand each others movements as being thieves, or because people carrying guns as protections against thieves get drunk and do stupid things.

I think it would go down. "Pity the fool" who carjacks a person with a gun who doesnt want to let go of his hard earned vehicle.

his tactics would need to change. he would need to seek out solitary persons and take them by surprise in such a way as they could not react in time to defend themselves. still a much riskier endeavour that many would not consider worth the additional risk. crime would fall and only the most hardened criminals (and the stupid ones) would remain.

We would have to fire a lot of police for lack of crime.

In the United States, depending on the city, you have the right to register for a concealed weapon. So this is not a new option. It appears that the crime rates are not effected by this right to carry.

Or maybe more people would get robbed and shot with their own gun. Do you believe most robbers / thiefs consider this as a risk to doing their business? If so I would guess you would make that arguement and I don't see the sense of disputing it. Not a novel thought and as another reply has noted many place you can carry a concealed gun which I find rather confusing - if the idea is to deter, why not let everyone know you are packing? +5

Well, purse or jacket wouldn't work for me.

I prefer a comfortable IWB holster.
Or, often my Beretta Bobcat in my front jeans pocket, looks like a wallet in there... I would be happy to show it to the ne'er-do-well, muzzle end first.
