I don't necessarily hate it, but it is not helpful therefore setting themselves up for legitimate downrating.
-
Yes. I saw that happend the other day here. Some one asked a question about a movie, and a person answered "I don't know, I never saw it". Well, WTF????
-
I don't know. But seriously folks, some people just want to participate and let you know that they were at least thinking about your question. Don't think it's for points because they probably wouldn't get any with that answer anyway.
-
Yes, I do. It may be a user that has come over from Yahoo answers. That sort of answer is quite prevalent there because writing anything at all in the answer submission gets you 2 points. Perhaps the suers in question are bringing that practice here in the hopes of easy points. It's "pointless", pardon the pun as that sort of answer doesn't mean that they will receive any points at all. It also irks me, if that type of answer is the first one posted. By doing that the answerer takes the question out of a high visibility area as well as making the question less visually attracting by removing the bold type face. This lessens the chance a bit, for the question to get a proper answer.
-
it depends on the question. for instance, if someone asks a question that starts "how much do you know about..." i think it's perfectly acceptable for someone to answer "nothing. will you fill me in?" i did that once and got quite an informative comment from the asker. no points were involved, but i learned quite a lot. so i don't really mind.
-
Most definitely. I mean honestly what kind of answer is that!
-
I don't know, hasn't happend to me...... lol...... yes and no, but I have done it, I'm sure, I'll give prevalent info, but not an answer, I keep it tagged that way so it comes up when someone else answers it, so I can find out too.
-
While your wanting to participate is great Mia, the problem is that "I don't know" doesn't give the person asking the question the information that they seek. Your question, BTW, is excellent!
-
No,it removes the question from the "Needs answers" lists and as such greatly reduces the chance of it getting answered.
-
Good question! You could answer any question like that, but the odds are you will get downrated. Keep in mind that this also depends on the type of question asked. There are some questions asked that are serious questions, and your answer would be less than appropriate. But there are questions that are meant for fun, and that answer would be taken as good humour. You'll also find that there are some very serious people here, there are some angry people here, there are people with good intentions. AB is kind of like real life. If you were in class and the teacher asked a question, or if you were in a business meeting and someone asked a question, would it be appropriate to say "I don't know"? It all depends on the context. Welcome.
-
Just go to a question you feel comfortable answering , thats what I do
-
It is not very helpful, is it? If all the thousands of Answerbaggers answered every question they didn't know the answer to with "I don't know", it would be impossible to find the real answers from people who did know. So it is best only to answer a question if you have something helpful to add. You don't have to have the whole answer, but you should be able to say something useful that others haven't already said.
-
Not really. Actually, it is against Answerbag Policy by saying this too many times. Posting an answer with "I don't know" will most likely get your answer rejected as Nonsense, so be careful with that, just a heads-up.
-
I think it's alright for an opinion-based question, something akin to voting "undecided", but I wouldn't use it for an educational question.
-
Dont bother, there is alot of people that just love downrating and you are just giving them ammunition.
-
I think "I don't know" is acceptable whenever you can follow it with an opinion and/or fact that offers a valid perspective. "I don't know", alone, seems rather pointless (pun intended).
-
Yes, I hate it when people do that. It's completely pointless; just don't post anything if you don't know!! No need for meaningless answers.
-
I just find it quite useless, generally. "Don't just say "I don't know" or "If you do a search, you can find the answer" - It just isn't a very helpful answer, and oftentimes people are asking here because they've already tried to use a search engine and still couldn't find what they wanted."
