Yes and yes. This isn't a utopia, there are myriad resons for us all to be depressed. The people that don't deal with it do a thing we call suicide.

No, depression is NOT normal (although it is increasingly common in the modern world). The problem is that people confuse ordinary grief, emotional upset, etc. with depression. When you suffer a life setback (say a relative dies), it IS normal to be 'depressed' for a short while. However, it is also normal that your mood goes back to its typical state as time passes. In depression, that 'normal' state does NOT reoccur. The person is stuck in a permanent state of 'down', and it can have devastating consequences to ones life and health.
