short stories are harder because they always want to turn into novels. so cutting them off short is more difficult. a novel is often several short stories intertwined with filler.

I've heard people say it both ways. That probably just means it's an individual thing.

Without a doubt novels. You have to spend time researching & developing the story & characters. Working out sub-plots & themes, any hidden meanings or messages. Then you have to make it all readable. Short stories are ace. You have a quirky idea, all you have to do is think about it for a short time then start writing.

If I could write a good short story, I think I could write a novel. I have just never been good at "creative writing". I have written essays and historical research papers that were graded highly and even published in school and local papers. But, fiction was never one of my talents. They say to start with your own experiences and work with them...but, I have never been able to put any of my personal experiences into a form that would make a good short story or novel that would interest anyone else. I can recognize and appreciate one when I read it, though. I think it is a gift and talent...like many others.

I find it a lot harder to write a short story most of the time. Although, now that I think of it...a novel is really a bunch of short stories that start, have a middle and an end, at least some of the time...in each chapter! lmao
