• I think it's always best to let the "law" handle things like this .. even though it would really feel good to just take back what belongs to you.

  In such a case it is difficult to get the law involved.

• I took it back........stealing is when you take something that does not belong to you lol,If you`r asking did i tell her no i didnt.........i walked into her room and took it,waited for her to say something later when she noticed i had mine back but she never did for obvious reasons

• That it was stolen by the very same person, I am positive. Talking to the person I have done already. He admits privately but will not part with the stolen goods.
  Since the time I asked this question I have been looking at other options for recovering what was stolen from me.

• It is a piece of expensive family jewelery. No records as it is a very old piece. If I were to lodge a police complaint I need to substantiate my ownership. Also the person who stole it will hide it so no recovery will be possible. Stealing back is the only solution, but I am worried about the ethics of it. Complicated.

• Morally, if someone stole something from you you can take it back. In the common law, the same thing as long as force is not required. In real life, you will be made out to be the thief if you cannot prove ownership. Are there other family members who can attest to your ownership of the item?

• There are. My only worry is about being booked for trespassing. I think I will consult a friend of mine who is police inspector, about the problem. He should be in a position to suggest something.

• I know the culprit and I know where he has locked it up. But going to police may not be an option, Starwalker. When I steal it back, the culprit too will not be in a position to go to the police. I think I will go ahead.

• I would think about the worst consequences before taking this step.
  Most of the cases,the person who goes to the police as first complainant is considered as innocent.Final decision is yours as you know better about the whole story.

• What you say is right, CL. The person who stole it from me will not give it back. He has locked it up. Only way to get it back is by stealing it back.

• Some things are such that proof of ownership is possession. As long as it was in my possession it was mine. He stole it and now it is in his posession. By virtue of possession he can claim ownership rights. He has locked it up. What other way to get it back where even a police complaint cannot help?

• Its a piece of ancestral jewelery. Quite expensive. No documents to prove it is mine. But it has been stolen and I know where it has been locked up by the person who stole it. Privately the person admits it is in his possession but will not give it back. Cops can't help.

• Just that he wants them. He says he would never have got it even for a price from me. But he admitted only to me at the first instance and when I took a few more people to intervene he refused to admit that he stole it and it is in his possession.

• Believe me. . . . .I know how you feel, Suby! I had a pseudo friend take some sentimental stuff from me that my mother had given me and some things that belonged to my DEAD sister. She took them when she came over to help me pack some things for a move! She even ADMITTED to taking them. But now she lives in another state and a return to get them just ISN'T feasible. Though she PROMISED to return them, I never heard from her again. VERY exasperating!
