Do you mean finish school and then take a year off to travel?

From the commentary on the other answer, there are workstudy programs that allow a person to study abroad. International student exchange. http://www.internationalstudent.com/

I know how you feel. I feel like I NEED to get out. I haven't found a solution yet, but kudos to you for realizing that. Keep holding on. :)

Stay in school, then afterwards you can do something else. Don't screw up getting your education! Just stick through it and get it done! You'll thank yourself later. Stay put, ya hear? Finish! You can do it!!

Just do it. I don't know what your family situation is, exactly, nor how old you are, but in my opinion if you want to do something like that, just do it. After highschool I took a year off. I didn't travel, but I joined a few organizations, volunteered different places, worked and spent endless hours aimlessly wandering the city. And that's when things started falling into place. Sometimes you just need to do something. You can't possibly get in the real world without getting to know it first, and yo can't possibly know it unless you explore. It doesn't matter if it's in your local city or around the world. In order to see the real world, you need to live it. Yes, school is incredibly important if you want to have a decent paying job and a comfortable life, but there is no rush. If you need to take some time, then better now than when you're halfway through university and decide to change programs altogether because you've come to realize that you aren't studying what you really want to be studying. And all that because you rushed. Good luck!
