  • you don't get food allergies from a scratch test. they test for food allergies. you can be born with food allergies or you can develop them later in life. i don't know of anybody that had an allergy because of a prescription drug.
  • Scratch tests can give many false positives and are a hypochondriacs wet dream. I would guess that presription drugs woudn't affect them except for anti-hystamines or steroids - but only a guess.
  • A scratch test is the first step in determining whether someone has allergies. Sometimes, scratch tests do not show how affected a person is and a clinician will have to do skin pop injections. People can be allergic to foods. And they can also have allergies that foods react to. I have mold allergies. When mold is high I can not eat mushrooms, canned foods, cheese or beer and wine. When grass pollen is high, I can't eat corn or mint. When flower pollen is high I can not eat beans, or peppers. When trees are pollenating I can not eat tree nuts. Then there are people who are simply allergic to the foods themselves. A different thing. Prescription drugs generally do not affect allergy tests. Unless they are antihistamines - and yes, they will affect the results OF an allergy test. Food allergies are not gotten by having allergy tests. Food allergies are a whole 'other' thing from allergies that are environmental. Your friend needs to be educated about their allergies. - I've been taking the allergy injections for 4 months. They are kicking my butt. I lose about 2 to 3 days a week after getting the shot.
  • I don't know, but this question reminded me of the story of the girl who can only eat Tic-Tacs - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-513054/The-teenage-girl-eat-Tic-Tacs.html , http://www.theweeklyvice.com/2008/02/natalie-cooper-tic-tac-teen-who-lives.html , and http://www.insideedition.com/storyprint.aspx?SpecialReportID=1316 . Food allergies can be extremely nasty. Think about it. There are people who can't even be in the same room with anything made of peanuts. It could kill them, by making their throats swell shut so they can't breathe. Many people are allergic to shellfish. (They've used that AND peanuts as a way to kill people in some of the law and CSI shows.) My son can't eat chocolate. It doesn't make him swell up, but causes gastro-intestinal problems. I'm sure doctors would take into account any prescription drugs, and their affect on any tests they run. If not, then they need to get a second or third opinion. Oh, and yes. There are women who have found they're allergic to their husbands' sperm. You can BECOME allergic to almost anything. I'm not sure how it works, but it's possible.
