Why do people named Richard call themselves Dick? Can someone please explain how you get Dick out of Richard?

My dad's name is Ricky...poor dear, lol. Kids named Randy in the US get picked on in the UK because in the UK randy means horny...yep. My uncle's name is Randy, my grandma had it in for her kids from the very start, lol.
