  • Having a teacher... You'll be surprised how much a novice needs one. However, if you've already played an acoustic guitar before, maybe you won't need a teacher. It's your choice, in all.
  • Even if you only have a few lessons it will benefit you. There are things an instructor can teach you that may take years for you to learn on your own.
  • a teacher is always better...you get taught properly and you become more disciplined. Believe me...I am a crap guitar player because I taught myself...
  • Depends on how good the student and how good the teacher, but generally, learning from one who already knows is better.
  • This is one of the fundamental issues in life. Cooperate or defect? Should I do what I'm told, or should I strike out on my own? Having a teacher can save you a ton of frustration and time. Experimenting on your own will help you avoid boring cliches and you'll develop your own style. Take the middle path.
  • trust me a teacher helps alot, i tried to learn by myself, it can go very bad. but idk hell hendrix was self taught so you never know
  • Get yourself a good guitar teacher and stick with him/her, you will learn much more. You can learn some on your own, but keep learning from your teacher.
  • Definately a good teacher. There are good teachers and there are poor teachers. A good teacher will get you started properly, keep you from making mistakes and acquiring bad habits, show you tips and shortcuts that you can't figure out on your own, keep you motivated, show you playing examples, teach you how to practice efficiently, and allow you to develop your own style. Spend some time evaluating teachers so that you find a good one and not a bad one. Usually a good teacher will charge a little more, but it wil be worth the price difference!
  • Definately a teacher - not just any teacher, but a really good one. A great teacher can save you time, make you better than you can get on your own, keep you motivated and improving each week, and most importantly, prevent you from developing all the mistakes and bad habits that guitar players seem to pick up when they are learning on their own. Once you develop bad habits, it is very difficult to turn things around. There are many poor teachers that wouldn't be much better for you than you learning on your own, so take the time to learn all you can about the teachers in your area so you can find the "real deal!"
  • You will progress faster with an instructor but the biggest difference will be practice. Just practicing the basics even as a well seasoned guitar player, makes you a better guitar player. Scales for example. If you did nothing but practice scales and chord transitions you would eventually have a more solid foundation for playing music than about half the guitar players out there. Yes it can be boring but the sacrifice is worth every minute. Learn the chord names and the notes. True professional players know music, not just guitar and they are the ones who are working in the business a lifetime, not just a few years.
