Why do our new green light bulbs have mercury in them?

Because such is less expensive than LED's, and consume less power than the incandescents.

And once again the Congress in their "rush" to get things done gave no consideration to that point in time, and that time will come, when these "green" light bulbs begin to burn out. That's going to be alot of mercury going into the landfills. This can only result in a new govenment agency to control their disposal and the cleanup of the mess that the defective bulbs and those that have already burned out have already created. In addition, there seems to have been little consideration given to the fact that they can't be manufactured in the United States. The vast majority are imported from China. That's government for you. That same government wants to regulate your healthcare? Lookout, big government is getting bigger.
