While it is a little tricky to do directly via an email, there are all sorts of instant messenger tricks and hacks. It is also a lot more common if you are using the Microsoft Windows operating system. Make sure you don't accept messages or click on links from strangers.

yes. yes and its not all that difficult to do either. What is more commonplace however, is to infect you without your knowledge via a downloaded file or email attachment, and if that occurs they can literally take over.

Yes, clicking on links can take you to attack sites that look innocent, and opening attachments can infect your computer with all sorts of nasty stuff that came in on the attachment, without you knowing it. Never use links and open attachments from people you don't know !!

The sure can. Make sure all programs are closed when you aren't using it, don't open links sent by people you don't know and don't download questionable files from sources you don't know.

Not if your careful and look after your machine. Get a quality antivirus like nod32 or Fsecure, use antimalware packages like spy emergency or malwarebyes get a proper cleaner like ccleaner and secure your sevice by shutting down what your not using and regularily checking slashdot for vulns and exploits aginst software you;re running so you can secure it. The list is almost endless. But most peple still just fall victim to an IP scan and insecure port.
