I have a feeling this is a rhetorical question.

It certainly seems that way. It's not only religion though. It's anything that has the word "controversial" as a descriptor. Take it from the girl who purposely attempts to get the fanatics angry whenever she sees the opportunity.

No, they do lots of other things as well. But the better ones actually speak up and voice their opinions, which I very much respect. Usually, I think they are idiotic, but I am slowly learning to understand their point of view. I think it takes a lot of guts to speak up for yourself when so many people around you think you are still living in the previous century.

Yes, that is all they can do.

Another Jefferson quote: Millions of innocent men, women, and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch toward uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one-half the world fools and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth. -- Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, 1781-82

Here we have an excellent example of an over generalization. By wording the question thus, steelhamster has managed to accuse all religious people of intolerance. So, the answer to this question should be a resounding "NO". Some religious people are intolerant and will do just about anything to silence those that disagree with them. However, this can be said of just about any philosophical extremist. You find such people can be of just about any religious, political, or social persuasion. In the vast majority of cases, the truly intolerant people represent only a small fraction of the total group. So, trying to paint all member of that group as being intolerant because of the actions of a few idiots does more to show one's own prejudice than it does to accurately portray the group.

Pretty much. However, you can't see it for what it is, you're supposed to see the love in that. You know, the same way that their god had his own kid hang on a cross for something or other? That kinda thing
-
not all....but many are like that.
-
some are, some are nice and actually like hearing other people's views without trying to convert them.
-
I've found that to be the case about 85% of the time.
