  • No... it contracts. That's why it breaks up into rocks instead of just remaining one huge sheet - as it cools, it contracts, and cracks. Only one substance known to man expands when it cools: water. And that's only at the freezing point.
  • I believe that anything and everything shrinks as it cools but has a chance of expanding as it freezes. When particles heat up they accelerate and their vibrations get larger pushing them farther away from other particles. I know that water expands as it freezes, I don't remember the details on other things freezing though. Sorry.
