  • I discovered this several years ago with a Compaq. It seems Internet Explorer, which is *intimately* tied to Windows, despite the EU and FTC warnings, is a memory leak. It seems IE grabs memory every so often and then never releases it. I noticed it first when I left my PC on all day (many many years ago) and came home to find that all the memory and disk (overflow memory) was consumed. And it wasn't attached to the internet at the time. Anyway IE is a resource hog, but not nearly as bad as Outlook, which can cripple your system. Microsoft still sux. Sorry for being soooo geeky, but I'm sure you can handle it.....
  • Can you hibernate instead? That might work better. You can also check and see if there are any BIOS updates for your system, they might help. Otherwise, just don't use standby. :)
  • My computer used to go in and out of standb fine, but then I got an external harddrive and it wouldn't come out of standby anymore. Turns out, if I turn off my external harddrive before putting the computer into standby, everythings fine again. Maybe some of your hardware is causing a similar problem. Also, as weatherman waiting for the moment said, don't use IE 8. I get along fine with internet explorer seven, but I tried upgrading to 8 once. I left the computer on for a long time, came back, and tried to open my homepage. Nothing came up. I brought up task manager, and there were 50 iexplore.exe processes going, and I wasn't even on the internet. Every time I ended one IE 8 said "tab recovered" and started a new one...
  • could be a hardware issue. in fact, given the fact that it's an HP, i'd be more inclined to believe that it's a hardware issue. but i certainly wouldn't rule software out. do you have the latest SP? without looking at you machine, it would be veritably impossible to diagnose, but have you considered hibernation. it's obviously not as speedy as standby, but it's better than having to reboot
