Windows Vista and 7.

According to my wife, who runs a computer support company and specializes in just this sort of thing, XP is more stable and better for a work environment than either Vista or Windows 7. Windows 7 is just a remade Vista with far fewer bugs. It is in its early versions and should not be adopted yet by anyone who just wants their computer to work. It is expected to become a better operating system than XP soon, but that time has not arrived. Until then, stick with XP.

I didn't like Vista at first ... but following my understanding and ease to use ... I really have grown to like and appreciate it. Peace

Any one of them. They all have some strong points and they all have some flaws. I would avoid XP unless you don't plan to ever buy new software because we're almost at the point where most new software will require Windows Vista or later. PC World magizine recently had an article about how to make Vista work like Windows 7 by using free downloads instead of upgrading. This is what I would recommend at this time.

Windows XP, it is the most stable, allows the user to actually change settings, and has the fewest bugs. My mother [a Cisco networking instructor] has Vista and has had a great deal of trouble with it. She is planning on downgrading to XP so can actually use her computer. I have no experience with 7, although I've heard it is slightly better than Vista.

XP is going to be outdated, whether or not it is more stable. And so far, my vista is working great. 7 looks like vista with a few subtle features, but I havent used it so I wont comment.

I'm still hanging onto XP. Like you I'm hoping to skip over Vista and go to 7. I'm hoping they will support XP until 7's 2nd service pack at least.

Windows 98SE! It had the longest run. Support for 98 didn't stop until sometime in 2006. And even then 3% of users still had 98. It might be way outdated now, but in my opinion, it's still better than XP or Vista. I personally don't like the way the new OSs look. I know you can use a "classic windows" scheme or similar to make it look like win98, but it's not the same.

Lady i have had XP and Vista. And i prefer the Vista! Have a Good Day!

Obviously Linux tops each of those, but from the list provided - Windows XP.

Vista is the worst, hands down. It has "won" awards for the worst software EVER of ANY type. I prefer drivers, stability, security, and generally the ability to operate when I am choosing an OS. Windows 7 seems promising, but is still Alpha-ware. It is more stable than Vista, and from what I hear it has better support, but the fact remains that it's still to early to tell. So, by default, XP wins.

Not being a software professional or programmer... I like them both. Installed Win 7 on a friends notebook PC and he is very happy. I am running Vista Home Premium and have absolutely no problems. That said - i don't believe the cost of Win 7 is worth making the change.

I have been using Vista for quite awhile now. After W/XP it took me awhile to get used to. The most annoying thing for me in Vista compare to XP, is due to the added security and when you are trying, say to save a new wallpaper, screensaver etc. on your hard drive you get a nasty message: "You need an Administrative privilidges to save this file... Access denied". If you are the only user of your computer it doesn't seem to make any sense. :( I had to install an additional "Take Ownership" program in order to perform the task I want. Other than that Vista is better than XP in my opinion. I have not used W/7. Can not give a feedback, sorry. :(

Out of the box: 7 Customized: XP My highly modified XP uses less than 100 megabytes of RAM with ALL the background programs I need. Everything works fine and it's extremely fast. But out of the box it's way worse than Windows 7. Still better than Vista, though.
