At one time the church did allow priests to marry. It was changed when it became a financial liability to the church.

Hmm, I wondered why they changed. Mind you, I don't think that the sexual abuse problems with priests would be quite as bad if they were allowed to marry. Besides with women working, the problems would not be as great.
