I think the languages of any two groups separated for enough time will drift apart. Languages continually evolve, even among the same group. It makes sense that they would not evolve the same in two groups with little or no contact. American English is not unique. We have Australian English, Mexican Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, and no doubt many more.

it evolved with so many cultures crossing and intermingling. new words were accepted and rejected.
