I have only talked to a handful of accountants, and maybe one in three enjoyed it. Most didn't make much money at all. I knew one who was working as a security guard a number of years ago as there wasn't much steady work. If you like that type of thing, I would use that as one of the main influences. I'm not sure how they are fairing with the current economy.

- I would also think so, but I think it is to those who are in the right place at the right time. I'm sure corporate would be steady unless the company closed. The ones I have talked to worked mostly in individual tax preparation. I guess that has fallen off with all of the computer programs. The one I know that likes it is also the one making a good living at it and he owns the business. They all say the big exam to become certified is a killer, and many fail the first few times.

- I had originally been thinking about going into it, but became an airline pilot instead. Now that has ended up being a mistake.

- It takes so many years while making so little money(average of ten years to get on with a big airline), and costs so much more than most other careers. If my extremely profitable airline that I had been with for eight years hadn't suddenly closed, I would be making $100 an hour right now. As it is, raising retirement age from 60 to 65 has put a virtual freeze on hiring. Retirement is traditionally the biggest source of new jobs, and there won't be hiring for about another 2 1/2 years. Combine this with the economy (thousands looking for every job opening there is), and I am back in school training for a second career. Pilots are the only group who didn't get even a penny severance pay as the owners laughed all the way to the bank!

Choice of a career should not be money based. GO for what you like doing as opposed to what might get you the cash, because when you are stuck behind a desk doing things that you have no interest in, it is not a job it is voluntary self confinement.

The criteria for choosing a career would be what really interests the chooser. Look first to what your true goals are. Money, fame, recognition, self-satisfaction, etc. Whatever it is that brings passion to your breast...that's the goal you have and the path to reach that goal can be accounting or law or medicine or ministry or psychology or whatever. But begin your search from the inside.

- my brother is a charted account and has a very high income, but once he said to me " you know what i am now earning more then i have ever done in my life , but i hate my job, money is not everything do something you enjoy" so i dont know if that helps.

- believe me its,but it also depends on the clients you get, and if you are working for someone ( which a little easier) or if you are self employed

It's wise if your family is jewish. But yes it is a very succesful job, everyone needs an accountant.
