Actually it's an elevator to the moon. Supposedly it would save energy to "push" a shuttle up to the moon, rathter than blast it with force off the earth.

Yes, I heard about the space elevator. It'll never happen obviously. We have more chance in finding ET in the next million years. Years ago it was on NEWSROUND that a scientist wanted to 'blow up the moon' so we could harvest its mineral deposits. It wasn't April Fool's and I swear this was actually reported. Some scientist huh? I take it he wanted the worlds oceans to be one giant stagnant pond?

Sounds like a geostationary space station with a tether up which things can be winched - at least the winching sounds easier than blasting a rocket.. of course there are problems... as the load is winched up, it has to be accelerated to orbital speed, and that energy has to come from somewhere... it will tend to slow down the station which would make its orbit decay. Would still need rockets to maintain the orbit
