Are there any weather conditions like extreme heat that may be contributing to this? If not, you may want to have your vet look into the possibility of congestive heart issues. I have a friend that has a dog around the same age who started breathing erratically and it turned out to be heart issues. She was given medication that cleared it up.

Spunky is 13 years old. Its old age for a dog. Give symptomatic treatment to make his breathing easier. Don't try hormone replacements which would be just unnecessary wasteful expenses.

13 is old age for dogs, a trip to the Vet might be a good idea. Is it possible Spunky could be over heating ? My dogs used to get overheated and would breathe erratically until I hosed them down with cool water. Something else that comes to mind - is it possible there is something restricting her wind pipe, ie: chicken bone ?

Pretty dog. My dog is the same age and a furball too. She always pants especially when it is really hot. Could be just the temperature. If it is quite unusual and continues, you should at least contact the vet to ask. Make sure he's got plenty of water for now......by the way, how did the second day of your match go? What did you shoot?

fluid retention is not uncommon I think in a dog that age. Heart pumps less efficiently so may need medication. could be chest infection, could be pollen problem. See a vet, problems left tend to get worse.
-
The only thing I can say is to keep her in the cool air. Mine has been having that problem; she's 12, and I'm planning to take her to the vet to check her.

My first inclination would be to take Spunky to the vet and let him/her tell you what is wrong, if anything...+5

If there's ALSO a cough. . . .he might have an enlarged heart! Either way. . . . I would DEFINITELY get "Spunky" checked-out by the vet!

Hi Cotton, hope your Spunky dog is doing better! Our little Pomeranian always had a tough time in hot and humid weather-she had a long, thick coat like your dog. You're doing the right thing by keeping him cool in your house.
