Help answer this question below.
I haven't had a land line since 2001, so I never use "off the hook" unless I'm referring to a party (e.g., That party was off the hook!) "Pick-up" I never use and never hear. People normally say "answer". But I still say "hang-up". That's true.
Wow! Time is passing us by so quickly we don't even catch the flash of it. Soon we will be ourselves without physical bodies at all.
I haven't dialed a phone in over 10 years.
Was there a question somewhere in there..? lol
More of a statement than a question, but you get a plus just for bringing up an interesting fact. :)
No I haven't =) Mind you, they're not obsolete since you can still get phones like that, if you want one.
I am amazed! I realized this very same thing about a month ago listening to someone talk on the phone. After that person was done with their call I asked "Do you realize we no longer "hang" our phone up?" They didn't seem to be seeing eye to eye with me, being from a generation where cellphones were the only thing they had ever known. I have had my eyes open lately for things that people say that have old meanings. Its fun to research them, or to just plain realize where it came from! Look up "the whole nine yards"; check out the various answers for that one. Of course football fans think it pertains to football, but what makes more sence that it could come from the sewing world. Happy hunting!

You're reading PICK UP the phone... the phone is OFF THE HOOK... HANG UP the phone... have you thought about how expressions like these are all obsolete and date to times when receivers actually dangled from hooks or sat in cradles?
