Help answer this question below.
The mother is ingesting the bowel movements. She does this for two reasons.
1- There are still nutrients in it that have not been absorbed by the puppy's bodies. In the wild, this would be crucial, in order to help ensure survival of both dam and pups.
2- It keeps the den cleansed of odor that would alert predators to the location f the pups. It's the same reason the dam also eats the afterbirth. +5
The mother is eating the poop when she licks them to stimulate their movement/pee.
Sorry, if any body is reading this and eating a snack!
Mom eats it, unless you manage to see it and get it before she "cleans up" around there. ;-)
mom, cleans the babies and eats the poop...the mom might throw it back up in the yard...some don't though....this is how she keeps the area where her pups r...in keeping it clean...this is normal...so don't be worried...ok. dichihuahua
The 1 week old puppies will poop 2-3 times (sometimes more) a day. Most certainly they are pooping and you're just not seeing it. :)
If they weren't pooping, they would be very cranky babies and probably fade away.
Mom is doing a good job of cleaning up. Sometimes the babies at one week will be able to poop on their own, and mom might just clean it up quickly.
Thanks all for the answers!
I am aware of that the mother licks them to stimulate both bowel movements and get them to pee. But I have been with her for 24/7 for the first week and only twice have I seen her lick the rectum of the puppies, she only seems to lick. I tried stroking two of them with a warm cloth and they pooped, so I tried the other ones and nothing happened.. some of them are crying a bit hard after drinking her milk, I don't know if it is because they don't feel good or because they have to go poopoo!?!
I have tried to ask everyone i know in this business and google it, nobody seems to know approximately how often a one week old puppy poops.

You're reading Qestion for breeders! I have a small litter (5 puppies) that are now 10 days old, from a collie/lab mix. They are feeding well, fell warm with a full belly but not bloated. Mother takes care of cleaning and they pee alot, but i hardly never see any poop?
