  • Computers are quite 'smart' but they're not very clever. Meanwhile human beings are extremely sloppy with their speech, using metaphors, colloquialisms, implication, slurrings.... the amount of programming required for understanding would be immense or so I understand.
  • Not really. English is much to ambiguous and contains far too many implicit assumptions for something as stupid as a computer. People tried to make programming languages more English-like. Generally the result was more anger, not less, because more "natural" the language, the more things that are obvious to the human are not to the computer, and vice versa. Non-programmers underestimate, by a very very long way, the stupidity of computers.
