  • Good question and here's my opinion. Unlike amateur sports, pro sports are about winning and there is no pretense of it being about "sportsmanship." Team members congratulate each other on their victory because it's their job to win. The losing team probably just wants to head for the clubhouse, get a shower, and go home or back to the hotel. You may see some individual players shake hands (more likely after an NFL game than a MLB game), but it's not a "team" thing. Shaking hands with the other team could also bring about an opportunity for continuing bad feelings that came up during the game. Take the recent Tigers/Red Sox game as an example. I doubt it would have been a good idea for the two teams to shake hands considering the earlier bench clearing "basebrawl." I've seen some amateur games when bad feelings spilled over into the post-game handshake. It was not pretty.
