HD Radio (the HD is a trademark meant to make you think "high definition, but it really stands for nothing) is a way to send digital signals along with your favorite AM or FM stations.

If you have an HD radio tuned into an HD station, it would go like this: You first receive the regular AM or FM analog signal, then after a few seconds the digital signal takes over. On FM the sound change often isn't dramatic (partly because engineers make the sound similar so you are not shocked by the change), but many HD FM stations offer more than one channel of programming on their one HD frequency.

For example, in Los Angeles, KRTH offers their traditional 60s and 70s-based oldies format on their analog and HD1 stream, but they offer a 50s and 60s format on their HD2 channel.

On AM, when processed right, the changeover to HD from a typical lo-fi tuner is amazing. Suddenly there are lows and highs you probably haven't heard from an AM radio since the days of tubes ...

ah, got it. Over here (UK), we call this Digital Radio instead. I think it has been slow to catch on over here partly because of the price of the radios themselves. As far as I know, even brand new cards here don't come with them fitted.
