because those stupid professors need money so they can be rich!!

there's a lot more to running a university as compared to a high school or middle school, and a lot fewer students that go. the tuition helps pay for professors, building maintanence, security, student health services, etc. professors don't get much more money than other teachers, but a lot of them have doctorates and are highly qualified to teach. colleges have large campuses and many require their own police force.
