Vinegar. I take it you have "long" hair. A half vinegar half water mixture should be used, get the hair soaking wet - wrap a towel around your head and let sit for 20 to 30 minutes - follow by a lot of rinsing and at least 3 shampooing. You will also notice that your hair (each hair) will "thin" and "soften" a tad - further the hair will "glow" or "shine". Vinegar is a weak acid, not only will it eat at mineral deposits it will attack the dead hair cells as well (all of your hair out side of the skin is dead, the only live part is the root). cider vinegar may work better than white or distilled vinegar since there are other things in cider vinegar which actually add toward healthier hair. BEFORE YOU DO YOUR WHOLE HEAD of hair - try soaking an end in water and vinegar mixture first. Some colors and individuals will see a marked change in hair color and or have an adverse reaction. Again vinegar is a weak acid.

Vinegar is great for gently removing hard water from hair. This is because it is a mild acid and reacts with the mineral deposits in your hair and remove them as you wash it. Try adding a small amount to the water you are using for the next few times you wash it and you should see a big difference over a week or so. Good luck! Source: http://www.hardwaterstainstips.com/
