The major difference is that Desktop Publishing is always done on a computer and Graphic Design may or may not be done using a computer. Graphic Design obviously must involve graphics, whereas Desktop Publishing need not. The distinctions are blurred but imagine an advertising leaflet with pictures and text. This is Graphic Design. Now imagine a multi-page newsletter with an interesting layout of multiple columns beneath a page wide Headline. This is an example of what Desktop Publishing produces.
