Is a 2 Ghz quad core cpu faster than a 2.53Ghz core 2 duo cpu or does it just allow you to do more things at once than a core 2 duo? Thank You

You left out two things; which quad-core are we talking here, and are we talking about an application that can use multiple cores? If it's a 2GHz Core2 Quad then any task that can use multiple cores will run faster on it while older stuff that can only use one core will run faster on the higher-clocked Duo. Older quad-cores use older, less efficient architectures though so not all quad-cores are created equal. And the i7 will eat them all for lunch.
