From Wikipedia: "The Serial ATA, or SATA, computer bus is a storage-interface for connecting host bus adapters to mass storage devices such as hard disk drives and optical drives. The SATA host adapter is integrated into almost all modern consumer laptop computers and desktop motherboards." So, simply, SATA is HOW the drive is connected to the computer. SSD means Solid State Drive. No spinning magnetic platter. Just a big memory chip ... or really group of chips. Nothing moves. They are much faster, more rugged, and more expensive than spinning platter drives. The cost is just now getting to where ordinary folk might be able to afford them. As with all new technology, there are many reports of problems by early adopters. SSD (drives) can be connected to the computer by SATA. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227449

SSD has no moving part (it stores data on a non-mechanical device, kind of like your flash drive) so you won't have to worry about mechanical failures, and it is a lot faster than conventional HD. But SSDs are generally more expensive than the conventional HD. Another thing to note is that the SSDs wear out a lot faster than the coneventional HD. You will probably have to buy a new SDD to replace your old one every 3 or 5 years. So if you have the money, go for it. If you don't, just stick with the conventional hard drive. (also a note: these info are as of now. Technology evolves fast. In a few more years maybe things will be a lot different)

Better for what? Put really basically, SATA drives have mechanical components. Solid State drives are exactly that - they use solid state memory. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive
