• Yes, but the translation wasn't as clean as we once hoped. Anyways, if you look at it like that, there are at least a hundred Perh suburbs that have names adopted from the Noongar language group.

• oh yes, and lots in other parts of Australia too. I grew up in Parramatta, which is Dharruk for "Place of the eels"

• Maybe it's just because people over here can be so insanely racist, especially against aboriginal people. I don't care what anybody says, there's no justification for it. They're only making what problems are present worse.

• our problem in sydney is that we pretend there aren't any left from the tribes of the sydney area....we are taught that at school...but it isn't true.

• I doubt it. In the sixties and before, there was this craze about 'full-blooded' aborigines. Hence the Stolen Generation and all of the crap they went through. Some people still think that if an aboriginal person isn't 'full-blooded' then they're not a proper descendant.

• it's hard to explain to people how it feels to be tied culturally to something when you don't look it. I have been living as an Italo-Australian for 27 years, have spoken the language for nearly 30, and I am a part of the community. I am considered Italian by the community. yet I haven't a drop of blood. My children are part of the community culturally and linguistically, but they are third generation Australian. It is so hard explaining to people that my children regard themselves as Italian, when the documents say they aren't....I feel for the aborigines...it is even worse for them. Hey, I gotta go to sleep now. Nearly midnight here and I have a long day tomorrow. Ciao.
