G'day Emmagirl, Thank you for your question. No, I don't think so. He chooses the lead casket rather than the gold or silver casket. He then returns to save his friend offering Shylock more than the price. Bassanio is tricked by Portia but his intentions are good. Along with Portia and Nerissa, Bassanio is the most honourable and sympathetic characters in the play. I have attached sources for your reference.
