Renal disease or ingestion of a foreign substance like a chemical. Antifreeze or tainted dog food would be a good guess. Remember the tainted dogfood scare of a couple years ago? Dog food tainted with chemicals killed many dogs and I believe that kidney failure was one of the ways it killed.
