Most of the computers I have had were either DIY frankenboxes or bare-bones systems and came without an OS at all. I run an Educators License version of WinXP Pro that I got a student discount on; $5. You probably won't be able to get the same price for a *legal* copy. All of my desktops in the last five years have run the same copy but have sometimes dual-booted to various Linux distros. Usually SuSE or Mandriva. The exception is my Acer Aspire One netbook, which came with WinXP Home SP3. Half of my systems have been free; either gifts or cobbled together from scrounged/salvaged parts. The three I paid for were a no-name bare-bones 1.1GHz Athlon ($160+shipping on eBay), a custom 3.4GHz P4 gaming rig with no drives ($50 used from a friend), and my little netbook ($360 at Officemax).

I bought, about two years ago, this one. It's a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista that I customized for a little under $2,000. It was difficult to order it because they wanted me to have this or that and I didn't want it, so I had to threaten to go somewhere else if they didn't just fulfill my purchase as I needed it to be. To be quite honest with you, I'm not sure it was worth my money. I had an old...OLD...IBM laptop that quit on me, but the tech people were able to find out what was wrong. It runs slow, but I never had as many problems out of it as I have this one...this is still true as well. I've ended up spending more money keeping this one up and continuing to customize it, that it's not worth it, it seems. I now need to buy a cooling pad for this one because it's getting to where it overheats and will burn your lap or wood surface. What kinds have you researched?
