How old is your kitty? How long is a "long period of time"? Is he neutered? If not, and he's over about 6 months old, there's a good chance he's out chatting up the female cats all over the neighbourhood!

Male cats do go off looking for females if not neutered. He is at risk of traffic accidents and will fight a lot leading to abcesses and cauliflower ears. If you do neuter, he needs 1/3 less food to keep his weight down.

If he's not neutered it's because male cats love to roam. They often will fight other cats, too, if they find a female in heat and stay away near her for the whole time she's in heat. If you get him fixed, most roaming will stop and he will live longer, be less inclined to get hurt or get run over.
