  • Are you 100% certain you have one of each sex? Sometimes, it's hard to tell for certain. Only the male sings; the female is mute. +5

  • Canary breeding can be simple but there is quite a bit of science involved. First you have to prepare them for the breeding season during the winter with less light, like around 9 hours a day and then increase the light to 13-15 hours, depending on the variety. If you don't prepare the birds to be placed together by March for the Northern Hemisphere, then you've lost out on this season. It's also a good idea to place them in a cage with a slide out divider so they can be side by side and then you just remove the divider and they are just in an extension of their own cage. Most hens will accept any male once they feel it's the breeding season so possibly because you didn't get them ready, she never got in the mood. A few hens are fussy about who they mate with and then it's best to let them choose, though if you are determined in a certain mating, you can place the chosen male and the accepted one next to her just before dark and first thing in the morning when the accepted one sings, let the chosen male into her cage and she might let him mate with her. That might be all it takes to get them together.
