  • Yes I have, more than once.
  • Yes, I have. I would have to term it as surreal. It was hard to imagine all those unthinkable atrocities happening to that real, live human being.
  • I had once... We were on a class field trip in 6th grade to a temple to see one. He survived while his family died, like most survivors. I only wish more sixth graders had taken interest.
  • Yes, in several places. The Holocaust Museum, in both Washington, DC and Montreal. Survivors usually volunteer there. My mom also worked with a woman who had a number tatooed on her arm. Their stories are moving, heartbreaking and inspiring. But perhaps most importantly, they bear witness to one of the most heinous acts in human history. Which is needed now more than ever because they are the last generation of direct witnesses.
  • Yes, her name was Lila Perl
  • I do not know how many I have met. I would guess 10-15. I worked in a major hospital in California and we had many as patients for some reason. They were all near their end and I saw a few of them die. You would not believe the stories they told. I worked night shift and had time to spend with my patients so I spent a lot of time there. Of course, I took off my lab coat before going into their rooms. I was able to help them more than most employees because I could utter just a few words in Rromanes and they knew "Gypsy", even though I spoke even less of it then than I do now. I would make a point of popping my head into their rooms a few times a shift or more often even if they were not my patients. I have spent more times sitting with them listening to them talk or rant, either in English or another tongue. By the time they were in the hospital they were very ill and sometimes temporarily forgot English. The most heart rending of them was one fellow on his last legs who had survived Camp medical experimentation. He was one of the ones who would lose it at night, become combative, and only calm down with some words in Rromanes even if they were just a few. Then he would launch into rants in Rromanes (he was Rromani, obviously) that I could not understand other than a few words. He and others who did this would forget when and where they were. I just sat and listened to them, saying a word or two, until they calmed down. I could tell some tales.
