Am I the ONLY person who when listening to early Van Halen thinks: "Eddy shreds; Alex is SO tight; Michael is so SOLID on bass and backups! And ... ....David Lee-Roth is SUCH a frakin' idiot!" Am I alone here folks?

No, you're probably not. David Lee Roth was never considered a technical or a very good singer anyway. What he did is bring a lot of intensity, irreverence and charisma to the frontman position. His antics and style suited the material, lyrics and image the band was showing at the time. Afterwards, with the appearance of Sammy Hagar, a better singer and somewhat of a different sensitivity, notwithstanding the tight musicianship of the other three, the material and style changed as well.

That's the Archtypical front man, mister, yeah he's an idiot. But it only really showed thru' when he went solo and tried to carry the sound based only on his personality.
