It doesn't always have to be controversial... some of my highest ranked questions for example are: How many of you ABers have parents who are still married? (which is rare now a days) Anyone want to congratulate everyone for logging onto AB? Can you touch your toes? Do you have a fat dad? I love my fat dad!

Controversial is not necessarily the way to go. Actually, controversial questions often don't get too many points. You want to have a question that not only everyone can answer, but that everyone wants to answer. For example, one of my questions is "Is there something just annoying the hell out of you right now?" and it has 111 points. People like questions like that, because it is easy to find an answer to it. Also, people love to complain, which makes people want to answer it.
