  • The moon has become tidally locked because it is not quite a perfect sphere: it is a tiny bit oval in the equatorial plane. This causes a force which, over a very long time, aligns the long axis of the oval with the earth-moon vector. It is still very gently "rocking" in place, so we can see slightly more than half of the surface.
