Why are so many houses in "tornado alley" made out of wood rather than stronger materials?

tornadoes will destroy anything so they just throw up whatever they can cheaply so its easier/faster to rebuild

Most of the houses made of stronger, more expensive materials would still be destroyed by a tornado. It's better to build the house you can afford, insure, and cross your fingers.

Because they know they are probably going to have to end up rebuilding anyway. So why spend more?

I always been amazed why so many people built their houses on the edge of beaches that are prone to flooding or in the middle of a forest that has a greater chance of fire. Mostly people do what they want because of cost, convience, and location within the regulations they must abide by - and may or may not rue the day. +5
