In the case of unregulated pills or drugs, there are no controls at all, that includes dosage amounts and quality. The FDA is overburdened, understaffed, in charge of regulating too many things. The FDA is counter-productive. I would not necessarily use the FDA as benchmark for control of drugs or supplements. However, there should be some kind of controls on all substances that make specific claims. There is also some who believe that the FDA's endorsement can be bought - which further invalidates the usefulness of FDA.
