I haven't personally been a patient of medical research, but my brother has. He's never had any side effects or complications because of the trial medicines he's taken. The US is pretty strict about most types of medical testing. It's rare that you'll have a serious complication. The only side effect he's ever had is a scar on his arm where they've drawn blood or given him the medicine through an IV.
