They take an oath. I call it the Hypocrital Oath but it may be spelled differently. Anyway, as a doctor, they must use every ounce of their skill to keep a person alive. They don't get to give up. Imagine if the were allowed to. "Hey, let's call it a day, I'm tired and this guy wanted to die anyway." Not.

What's the point of releasing criminals from jail?

That pesky obligation of medical ethics?! ;-)

I agree with SHARON. Doctors will keep trying to resuscitate somebody who is on the brink of death until they are either revived or there is no more hope. The decision about when to stop requires discretion on the the part of the doctor. The point would be (1) because life is valuable and we should try to protect it and (2) because once the person is revived, he or she could hopefully be encouraged to get therapy to deal with whatever is causing them to want death more than life. Suicide is a permanent solution to what is usually a temporary problem.

That is what they are getting paid for, plus most people including myself often don't know what they want and if you can keep them from killing themselves now later on they will be thankful they didn't do it as now they are alive to think about what it is they want. Been there, done that.

alote i get what you mean if a person wont to die let them die it not that hard just sit back a wait
-
the person wants to die but what about his family n people that love him?
-
I keep wondering that. I guess it's because when a Dr takes the hypocratic oath, they agree to fight to save a person until the very end, and they would be breaking that if they let the person just die.
-
If a person has the right to live he should also have the right opposite of that, which is suicide.
-
Everyone should try to live a meaningful life. Giving up is kinda selfish. What is the point of suicide? I tried it and I realized all you are doing is running from your problems. Why leave the Earth with personal issues unresolved? If everyone did that... nothing would get done. Suicide is lazy thinking.

I see that many people make this sound as though it's a difficult decision for doctors. Not so. I'll tell you exactly how it is. True, they do keep trying to resuscitate a patient suicidal or not. However, if it looks as though the person will not make it or won't make it for long, they will ask the patient (if and when they are able) or the next of kin if necessary to sign a DNR--a do not resuscitate order. If the person truly wants to die, they will sign. It's truly funny how it works, though. They will say a person in that "frame of mind" cannot make this type of decision.
