Here's a quote from a document written under George Washington, and unanimously passed by congress under Adams. . "As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion..." . The assumption that the founding fathers based this nation on honoring the jehova god is untrue.

Assuming this is true, the sons sometimes stray from the fathers teachings or beliefs, making their own decisions in the process. Should they always be punished or chastised? Not in my opinion.

Most do not accept what you've claimed about the founding fathers. But even if that were the case, this is overall a bad idea: human beings should not just treat either the majority opinion or the opinions of long-dead leaders as authoritative in such matters -- that is what is technically known as "being a lemming". Every human has to grapple with the big questions about life and God and themselves: each person has to start from scratch and learn to stand on their own two feet about this. That means courageous inquiry, careful observation, and a willingness to stand up to the opinions of the public and say "I'm sorry, I disagree". Anything less than that kind of fierce commitment to personal discovery is selling out. We don't need a nation of sheep, we need a nation of adults.

The only purpose religion serves is to divide people into groups of "Us" that are righteous, holy, and going to heaven vs., "Them" that are sinners, infidels, and going to hell. That doesn't sound very tolerant of other people's beliefs in my opinion but on the other hand, I've never known anybody that lived by the entire Bible. Each group just picks out the parts that are convenient and disregards the rest. However, churches do serve the purpose of community social clubs, somewhat like country clubs without a golf course, so that feature may be a good point.
