Answerbag is not a medical forum. Only her doctor can safely answer this question. It sounds serious to me, she should seek medical help immediately.

If it was my friend, I'd put her into a car and rush to the hospital, no questions asked. It could be ANY of VERY serious problems: varicose, acute thrombosis of deep veins, if both - even a congestive heart failure, thrombophlebitis, it also could be leukophlegmasia, endocrine problems, joints - ANYTHING! I hope you are convinced in extreme urgency to visit a doctor.

Retaining fluid, circulation issues best to be checked for actual cause

sounds like congestive heart failure to me

Mine are doing that and my doctor said it's from too much salt intake. However it could be from blood clots or heart problems or anything so PLEASE do take her to the doctor or ER. Don't just assume it's nothing or salt or something non serious.

My husband recently had that and it was from atrial fibrillation - very serious. Your friend should seek medical attention ASAP.

Have her put her feet up and ice them, if she can. If the swelling doesn't go down, I'd go to the ER.
